Skeleton Tree by Kim Ventrella5/13/2023 ![]() In second grade, I entered my version of Roald Dahl’s story “The Landlady” in a writing contest and won second place. Tell us a little about how you got started writing? I also love books that help me understand the world in new and surprising ways, like Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. I love discovering a story world that I want to inhabit long after the book ends. When I was younger, I adored Roald Dahl, Shel Silverstein, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Bunnicula, biographies and Agatha Christie. I’ve always had an eclectic taste in books. ![]() When did that love start and who/what helped that passion for reading grow? Knowing that you are a librarian and a writer, I feel confident saying you must love books. I'd like to start with a couple questions about you, so the reader can get to know you a little. I really enjoyed the book and loved the characters. ![]() It is exciting seeing Skeleton Tree pop up in so many places on social media! I just finished reading it this past weekend, and let me give you a well-deserved congratulation on a well-written, touching book. Published by Scholastic Press, it was released in October. It is a finely tuned story exploring life, love, families and friendships, and the stirrings of the heart which define them all. Kim Ventrella is the author of Skeleton Tree, a children’s book about what happens when you find, and believe in, the unexpected. ![]()

Tony hawk 9005/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() The 900 had been at the top of Hawk’s trick wish list for over a decade, the final entry on a list of tricks the Birdman wished to complete before he hung up his helmet and shin pads for good - last on the list because it would, of course, be the trickiest. But it’s the 900, of all the outlandish tricks to ever be successfully completed, that’s still the most revered. The first landed triple cork in a snowboard competition? Check. The first ever freestyle motocross double backflip? Check. The first-ever snowmobile front-flip? Check. Since its inception in 1994, the X-Games have found a home for some of the most mind-boggling, gravity-defying and physics-flouting tricks to ever be performed in the world of extreme sports. “This is the best day of my life,” said a 32-year-old Tony Hawk upon completing the apparently impossible on June 27 at the fifth instalment of the summer X-Games in San Francisco. The 900° is considered one of the most technically demanding tricks to be performed on a board and back in 1999 it was the Holy Grail of the skatepark. There’s a fine line between the possible and the impossible. ![]()

Captal's Tower by Melanie Rawn5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Just ask these other authors whose epics still have no end in sight but are very much worth the wait.Īnd remember, they’re not your bitches either. And there were 55 years between Harper Lee’s two novels.īut he's one of the first in the internet age, when sites like Reddit act as echo chambers of fan rage at the glacial pace of his writing. It’s an opportunity for geeks to engage in that most fanboy-ish activity - complaining.ĭealing with trolls chiming in on every article and blog entry mentioning Martin must surely sap some of his energy, and probably leads to some spite at the delays. But like Neil Gaiman infamously said in 2009 when fans were grousing over the long wait for Martin's previous novel, A Dance with Dragons, “George R.R. Stephen King took more than 20 years to complete The Dark Tower. Martin isn’t the first author to take decades to finish a series. ![]() Martin still hasn’t finished Winds of Winter even though the HBO series has come to an end. ![]()

The goblin emperor book5/13/2023 ![]() So he had not been wakened from sleep by the emperor's messenger, but only because he had not yet been to bed. "Come along!" he said as soon as Maia had his jacket fastened, and Maia followed him barefoot out of the room, noticing in the stronger light that while Setheris was still properly and fully attired, his face was flushed. Maia could not find his stockings, nor would Setheris give him time to search. Setheris watched grimly by the single candle's light, his ears flat against his head. Maia struggled into drawers, trousers, shirt, and jacket, aware that they were wrinkled and sweat-stained, but unwilling to try Setheris's ill temper by saying so. "Is't not what I said? Merciful goddesses, boy, canst do nothing for thyself? Here!" He jerked the nightshirt off, caring neither for the knotted strings nor for Maia's ears, and shoved his clothes at him again. Maia dropped them, fumbling with the strings of his nightshirt, and Setheris hissed with exasperation as he bent to pick them up. "Get thy clothes on." Setheris shoved yesterday's clothes at him. ![]() ![]() Obediently, Maia crawled out of bed, clumsy and sleep-sodden. ![]() "Cousin? What…" He sat up, rubbing at his eyes with one hand. Maia woke with his cousin's cold fingers digging into his shoulder. ![]()
